  • Keep It Real

    how do we allow ourselves

to distort our own emotional self-portraits

    by trying to view ourselves

    through someone else's eyes?

how do we get so caught up in

    expectations and perceptions

    and forfeit the truth for

    masked and hidden verity?

our collective sadness is a child

    born of our life's experiences

    and only succeeded by

older and darker versions of itself...

    our hurt and anger shows

    through our indiscretions and sins

    against ourselves and each other...

i often wonder if god is ashamed of

    our shamefulness and selfishness...

i wonder if the love in our hearts is

pure and true enough to overshadow

the dark and evil deeds we do on a regular basis...

    the misfortune of my curiosity

    is that unanswered questions

    cause more confusion

    and we cop out

    we sell out

we continue to falsify emotional documents

we proceed to use others' eyes

to view ourselves and we fail to see inside...

we fall short of what should be beautiful

because we focus on superficial and

    depthless, cursory images

that burn themselves in our memories

attach themselves to the depths of our minds

    and hold our independence hostage
